Data Protection UK-EU equivalency arrangements. February saw the publication by the EU Commission of two pieces of legislation. One for GDPR and the other for data used in law enforcement. The nub of it all is that for the next four years, the UK has adequacy and can carry on with DPA as before – phew!

The law enforcement aspect only applies to those involved with the police/ security services or certain local authority investigations. Why four years?

Essentially the EU wants to make sure that the UK Government doesn’t undermine the rigour of GDPR and lessen the commitments. The legislation now goes through the EU approvals process and should be in place formally in a few months time. Not quite put to bed but close enough.
